URBAN BLOCK GARDENS

" Guide to Block Gardens, Walks among the Geddes Gardens in Tel Aviv from the Leibling House to Dizengoff Square"

This booklet, the first in a series of pocket guides to block gardens, is based on the "City of Gardens" research conducted by the office of Ruth Liberty-Shalev and Adi Har-Noy Architecture and Conservation, commissioned by the Urban Conservation Department of the Tel Aviv Municipality. The booklet focuses on a section of Patrick Geddes's plan for the city of Tel Aviv and offers a sample route starting from the Leibling House, through several 'block gardens' hidden within residential blocks in the city center, and ending at Dizengoff Square. The gardens along this route distinctly embody the vision of the "Garden City" conceived in 1925 by the planner, botanist, and sociologist, Sir Patrick Geddes, for the city of Tel Aviv. The 30 gardens that were developed and preserved until today have managed to maintain the qualities of 'a retreat in nature' within the 'privacy of the home' as Geddes intended. Today, they offer a secret system of alleys, paths, and 'green windows' that weave through the contemporary city. Another book in the series will be published soon.
